There are several benefits of becoming a member of Bayelsa State Union. The benefits include the following:-

Categories of Membership
The Union has 3 categories of membership as contained under Article 6 of the Constitution. These are:-
• Full Membership
• Associate Membership
• Friends of Bayelsa

Membership Explained
Article 6: Membership
Full Membership
(1) Full Membership of the Union shall be open to persons over the age of 18 who are interested and show commitment to furthering the overriding objectives and who have paid the membership fees set down by the Union from time to time and must pay any levy or subscription laid down from time to time by the Union and must:-
(a) Be born to a parent who is an indigene of Bayelsa State under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the time being; or
(b) Be born in Bayelsa State. An affidavit of birth sworn in a competent court shall suffice; or
(c) Provide authentic and verifiable evidence of naturalization as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and consequently became an indigene of Bayelsa State by having a main or only place of residence in Bayelsa State for at least 10 years; or
(d) Provide authentic and verifiable adoption by a parent who is an indigene of Bayelsa State under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the time being; or
(e) Be married to a person who is an indigene of Bayelsa State by ancestry or birth or naturalization or adoption.
(2) Every Full Member shall have one vote, but if the vote is to elect or remove a member of the Executive Committee, only members who have at least 50% attendance record from the latest Annual General Meeting before the date of the vote, shall have a right to vote.
(3) Full Membership is conditional upon completion of a signed registration form being received by the Executive Committee.
(4) Individual members of the union are regarded as one family in the true sense of the word.

Associate Membership
(5) The Union provides for Associate Membership. In this case any Ijaw or Niger Delta organisations or individuals can apply for Associate Membership. The organisation or individual shall pay an annual membership fee as may be determined by the Union from time to time. Associate Members have no voting rights. They cannot attend the monthly general meetings or the annual general meeting.

Friend of Bayelsa
(6) The Union shall grant the status of “Friend of Bayelsa” to organisations or individuals (from any part of the world), who identify themselves with the objectives of the Union and can and is willing to contribute towards the development of the Union and/or Bayelsa State. Friends of Bayelsa are not required to pay membership fee. However, they are expected to make an annual voluntary donation to the Union. They have no voting rights. They cannot attend the monthly general meetings or the annual general meeting.
